The Blind Man on the Road to Jericho

14th Sunday of Luke

Beloved,

The following is a short reflection on today's gospel reading:

The reading from this Sunday had to do with a blind man asking Jesus for his sight.

The man is able to get our Lord's attention through crying out to him—Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!

When Jesus hears this he stops and asks the man—what do you want me to do for you?

When God Himself asks us this question what is our response?

Do we ask for vision, understanding, discernment...sight?

Do we ask to see things according to God's will?

Often we ask not to see but for things to be according to our will—our shortsighted, petty will.

Lord, prosper me, make things easier, alleviate my suffering...

He wants these things for us and sometimes He even gives us these things, but often these things we ask for are not what is best for us in terms of our salvation—our ultimate union with God.

One of the best ways to ensure that we unite ourselves to our Lord is to imitate Him.

To imitate Him in humility, in love, in integrity

Today we are shown another way that we can imitate Him—we can ask Him the question He asks us—what do you want me to do for you?

How can I serve you my Lord?

Reveal to me how I can work with You?

So ask Christ this question and ask Him to open your eyes to see His answer that we may each receive vision and understanding for our Lord.

With Love in Christ,

Fr John
